Pair of 18th Century Silver Tea Tongs

  • An good pair of 18th Century tea tongs, with circular finger rings with top flying scrolls, the arms are of the S scroll on a C type and lead to a large box hinge with the letters I & B nicely engraved on either side of the hinge. The shafts are of a wavy design and measure 11.5 cm in length and 5 cm across the finger ringers, the weight is in the region of 5 grams. These tongs were made by William Chatterton, and these can be dated to 1776, the lion Passant is the one used from 1776 to 1795, as the bottom of the punch is flat, also Chatterton died in 1776. The condition of the tongs is excellent, a minimal repair has been done to mask a split through one of the makers marks, a tiny amount of solder can be seen.
